What is Exfoliation?
The world of exfoliation is a vast one. Today we’re here to explore how it works and some of the options that are available to you.
Exfoliation is the process of removing old skin cells from the epidermis, the uppermost layer of the skin. It is necessary to keep the skin from looking dull and unhealthy. Naturally our skin has its own exfoliation process but sometimes it needs a little help. This help can come by way of mechanically (physically sloughing the skin’s surface) or by way of chemical ingredients specially designed to “break down” or “eat” skin cells.
Now, we all know about our “favorite” off the shelf exfoliation product with the walnut and apricot kernals…. it’s what was engrained in us from our teenaged year. “Use this *insert scrub who must not be named* scrub and SCRUB away dirt and acne, you’ll be fixed in no time!” Not necessarily the best method, product or thought process for exfoliation or acne as there is high potential in creating micro-scratches in the skin that cause the skin more harm than good.
What benefits do I gain by exfoliating?
Routine exfoliation is going to help keep your complexion even, bright and clear. It also will help stimulate the reduction and prevention of some of those pesky fine lines and wrinkles that we all get as we get older. This achieve by stimulating the growth of collagen, the component that gives our skin it’s bounce/firmness. Exfoliation also helps with smoothing out the texture of the skin by sloughing off built up skin that cause that feeling of roughness.
So how do I include exfoliation into my routine?
There are a variety of ways to include exfoliation into your skin care routine. Cleansers, toners, scrubs, gels, creams, devices and medications. The big question here is of all of those options, which is going to be the best for me? That’s where having a skincare professional comes in to play. Always consult your esthetician or dermatologist when trying to include exfoliation into your routine. They can help outfit a skincare regimen suitable to your concerns and needs. Let’s face it, we all know that too much of something can sometimes be a not so good of a deal. Proper instruction and usage will help keep your skin glowing and youthful
